Heart opening Yoga and Inversions ![]() We’ve been exploring Heart opening and Inversions in social media in the last 2 weeks. More this week! Heart opening Yoga practises and inversions are a beautiful part of the practice at Centenary Yoga, inviting students to move beyond physical flexibility and experience greater confidence, resilience, and inner peace. These practices encourage us to soften protective patterns held in the body while building strength, balance, and trust.Heart opening postures in Yoga are generally Backbends; we gently expand the chest, and soften through shoulders &upper back, creating space for deeper breathing and improved posture. Our heart is the first organ to form in our bodies as babies. We hear the heart at 5-6weeks! Spiritually, Anahata Chakra is aligned with our premier organ, the seat of compassion, joy, peace and love. Nourishing heart openers regularly explored at Centenary Yoga include the following:* Sphinx, Cobra and locust poses strengthen the back while gently opening the front body. * Bridge pose builds stability in the legs and spine while encouraging an open chest and flexible shoulders.* Camel offers a deeper stretch through the front body and can inspire courage and emotional release. * Supported Fish or butterfly pose provides a restorative opening that encourages relaxation and receptivity. These postures are best paired with mindful breathwork such as diaphragmatic (belly) breathing or gentle Ujjayi breath, helping to calm the nervous system and deepen awareness. You can aHeartfulness meditation complements the physical practice by encouraging students to cultivate compassion, gratitude, and self acceptance. Together, movement, breath, and stillness create an opportunity to connect with both body and heart. In The Real Me I commented that “Your heart already knows the way home.” Our practice helps us to reconnect with our most authentic selves through kindness and presence.Inversions offer another powerful dimension of practice. An inversion is any posture where your head is below your heart. Softer inversions such as Downward Facing Dog and Dolphin Pose allow students to experience many of the benefits of being upside down while building shoulder strength and improving circulation. These accessible postures help lengthen the spine, energise the body, and provide a fresh perspective without placing excessive load on the neck. For those with appropriate preparation and guidance, Shoulderstand, forearm stand & Headstand offers a more advanced inversion that develops focus, core strength, balance, and confidence. Physically, inversions improve circulation, strengthen the upper body, and enhance body awareness. Metaphysically, they symbolise seeing life from a different perspective, letting go of old patterns, and cultivating trust & courage! Many practitioners experience a sense of clarity, calm, and renewed energy after practicing inversions with mindful alignment and steady breathing. At Centenary Yoga, heart opening practices and inversions are approached with care, encouraging every student to honour their own journey while discovering greater vitality, capacity, openness, and connection from the inside out. Well-being for your Whole being! Love, Sarah |
